The Mona Lisa is a fairly small (77 × 53 cm) portrait of a Florentine merchant's wife, painted by Leonardo da Vinci around 1503–1506. So why is it the most famous painting on Earth?
1. The technique really was revolutionary
Leonardo used sfumato — building form from dozens of translucent glazes with no visible lines — so the corners of the eyes and mouth melt into soft shadow. That is why her expression seems to change while you look at it: your eye keeps re-reading the blurred corners.
2. It was stolen
In 1911 an Italian handyman walked out of the Louvre with the panel under his coat. The two-year manhunt put the picture on front pages worldwide — arguably the moment it went from admired masterpiece to global celebrity.
3. Fame feeds fame
Duchamp drew a moustache on her, Warhol silk-screened her, and every parody made the original more iconic. Today the painting is famous partly for being famous — but the quiet radicalism of Leonardo's technique started it all.
