What Is Fauvism? The "Wild Beasts" of Colour
2026-07-05

Fauvism lasted barely four years (about 1905–1908), yet it permanently unhooked colour from reality.
Another insult that became a name
At the 1905 Salon d'Automne a critic found a delicate Renaissance-style sculpture surrounded by these blazing canvases and exclaimed: "Donatello among the wild beasts" — les fauves. The painters kept the label.
The one rule: colour is free
A face can be green, a tree trunk red, a shadow pure blue. Colour is no longer a description of an object; it is an independent force used for emotional and decorative effect. Paint is applied in broad, flat, confident strokes with the canvas often left showing through.
Matisse is the master
Henri Matisse is the movement's centre of gravity. Look for a bold contour, a flat area of unmixed colour, and a composition that feels like a decorative pattern as much as a scene. His pictures aim at pleasure — he once said he wanted art to be like a good armchair.
Fauvism vs Expressionism
Both use unreal colour. But Fauvism is warm, sensual and celebratory; Expressionism uses the same freedom to convey dread. Same tool, opposite temperature.
