How to Recognize a Picasso (Any Period)

Pablo Picasso is tricky in a quiz precisely because he kept reinventing himself. Know the periods and he becomes easy.

Blue Period (1901–1904)

Everything cold blue: gaunt beggars, blind musicians, sorrowful mothers. If a painting looks like sadness dipped in ink, think early Picasso.

Rose Period (1904–1906)

Warm pinks and ochres; circus acrobats and harlequins replace the beggars.

Cubism (from 1907)

With Braque he shattered objects into overlapping facets seen from several angles at once — guitars, bottles, faces in profile and front view simultaneously. See the full story on the Cubism page.

Late Picasso

Distorted figures with both eyes on one side of the face, minotaurs, weeping women — expressive, rubbery anatomy drawn with a child's speed and an old master's confidence.

The universal tell

Whatever the period: confident, simplified contours and a face that ignores how faces actually work. If the anatomy is "wrong" but the picture feels utterly sure of itself — Picasso.
