Realistic faces + flat golden ornament
Klimt paints faces and hands with delicate, academic realism, then surrounds and dresses them in flat, glittering fields of pattern — spirals, eyes, rectangles, checkerboards — often in real gold leaf. The person floats in a mosaic. That collision of 3-D skin and 2-D ornament is the signature of works like The Kiss (1908).
Why gold?
Klimt's father was a gold engraver, and Klimt himself was stunned by the Byzantine mosaics of Ravenna. His "golden phase" fuses those mosaics with Viennese Symbolism — sensual subject matter treated like a sacred icon.
Beyond the gold
His landscapes are quieter tells: square canvases packed edge-to-edge with flickering dabs of flowers or birch trunks, almost woven like tapestry — no sky, no horizon.
